What to expect: our training at the Park City Ski and Snowboard school is designed to be fun and informative.  In addition to learning more about the winter sport you love, the multi-day clinic presents an opportunity for you to improve physical skills, discover effective teaching tactics, and connect with other new instructors.

We are excited to host a majority of training on snow, since that is, after all, where you’ll be working – on snow. From 9 AM to 3:30 PM each day you will be on snow with your Trainer, with limited breaks.  Bring a backpack with water, snacks, and a lunch, if you’d like. Food is also available at a discount on the mountain.

These days on snow will be dense with information and require focus from everyone in the group. Please bring a good attitude and keenness to learn. Make sure that you ask questions.

Our goal is for you to feel comfortable connecting with your students, teaching them how to use their equipment, keep them safe on the snow, and have fun together.  There are a lot of small details that go into a great ski or snowboard lesson and, for this, a healthy amount of “on-the-job” education extends from your time in Basic Training.

Mandatory online training.

Vail Resorts requires all employees to do online training though “The Lift.” These modules will be made available to you on your first day.

What to wear for Training

The majority of your training will be taking place outside on snow.  That means you will be spending long stretches of time outside.  Dress appropriately for the weather.

SOME RULES OF THUMB FOR SUCCESSFUL TRAINING:

  • DO Be on time and have all of your gear.

  • DO Be Prepared to be Outside All Day. Wear appropriate snow-sports clothes for the weather: gloves, snow pants, a snow jacket, and an extra layer for cold days.  Wear one pair of good ski socks!

  • DO Wear an Extra Layer: You will be learning about teaching Skiing and Snowboarding: that means you will be spending time standing and discussing, not ripping it as you might when on your own… an extra layer is always a good idea!

  • DO Wear Your Helmet: They are required, and don’t forget goggles!

  • DO Check the Forecast: Park City Weather Forecast

  • DO Bring a Snack: You will stop for lunch (buy on hill or bring with you), but it’s a good idea to have a small snack to stick in your pocket in case you get hungry early

  • DO Bring a Small Notebook and Pencil if you like to take notes

  • DO Have your Pass!

  • DO Use Sunscreen!
